Excessive Sorrow Laughs: An American Prophecy

(2015) Excessive Sorrow Laughs: An American Prophecy is a 14-page comic reimagining of William Blake’s America: A Prophecy (1793). While Blake’s illustrated manuscript describes the absence of gods and heroes during an apocalyptic revolution, Excessive Sorrow Laughs imagines the apocalypse in the age of Starbucks and Monday Night Football. The title comes from a proverb by Blake: “Excessive sorrow laughs, excessive joy weeps.”
